History of the Tournament of Roses

January 1, 2010 will be the 121st Annual Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, CA and this year's theme is 2010: A Cut above the Rest.   • 1890 First Tournament was staged by members of Pasadena's Valley Hunt Club to showcase the mild winter weather

  • Festival soon was expanded to include motorized floats and marching bands

  • Games included ostrich races, bronco busting demos and a race between a camel and an elephant

  • 1895 Tournament of Roses Association was formed

  • 1902 first football game was held but traded for chariot races after the game ended 49-0

  • 1916 football returned to stay

  • 1923 first football game hosted in the new stadium "The Rose Bowl"

  • Floats now feature computerized animation and exotic natural materials

  • The Rose Bowl game has sold out every year since 1947
